Mateo is a zombie, unfortunately. Only partially infected as a child, Mateo was asymptomatic until his untimely death at the age 19. With his immune system compromised, the zombification was finally able to finally take hold, and he began his undead life by clawing himself out of his very fresh grave. Before he could start a very deadly outbreak, his mindless trek was intercepted and he was slowly able to regain control over himself. Hooray! He's still a zombie though, and he still needs to eat brains fairly regularly. Oh well.

Mateo has always been a fairly quiet person, even before his undeath, and he can be easy to miss once you get used to his shambling presence. Though he’s always been quiet, being a zombie has made speaking a bit of a chore, so some patience is required if you want to hear what he has to say. And you should want to hear what he has to say, by the way. It’s important.
